now that's the magic number...

I've been working on numbers. I don't know if they will become a regular thing I do - like my hearts and stars or if I will do them for a limited time.

wednesday collage...

Life has been so crazy the past few weeks! I managed to complete some homework an hour before I needed to leave to go to my art class. I decided to create collages with the kids. Tonight I introduced them to Romare Bearden and showed them some of Picasso's work ( the three musicians). I took a box of scraps of random papers I’d been saving, a pile of magazine pages that I’d saved for such an event and some stuff like Starbucks sleeves and money envelopes from Chinese New Year. I threw in some wrapping paper scraps and an assortment of paper and I was good to go. The kids had a blast and I got a chance to relax for a few minutes and make my own collage.

teaching art to kids...

I've been teaching a group of kids in grades 2-5 art each week. We usually do a lesson coupled with some art history based on a specific artist. Last night I told the kids about pop art and showed them some of Andy Warhol’s work and had them color their own soup cans. I tried to explain Andy Warhol’s way of mass-producing things and how he used color kind of like a stamp rather than with detail. I demonstrated with my own picture. The kids interpreted this idea by coloring with reckless abandon, which could be seen as really cool or really crazy, depending on if you are a color in the lines kind of person…

earrings...

This holiday season I was more creatively adventurous. I went back to my roots in many ways, one activity being making beaded earrings. At one point (many years ago) I was completely absorbed with beadwork. It was in the process of working with beads that I stumbled upon a variety of wire and began wire sculpture. Sculpture is still my first love and yet at times I do things like making earrings, sewing and drawing. I simply like to create.
